Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA)
First Vice President
Captain Joe DePete serves as ALPA’s First Vice President. He was elected on Oct. 12, 2014, at the Association’s 45th Board of Directors meeting and assumed office on Jan. 1, 2015. As First Vice President, he serves as the ALPA national safety coordinator overseeing the Association’s Air Safety Organization, which manages the union’s Safety, Security and Pilot Assistance programs. He also serves as treasurer for the Association’s political action committee, ALPA-PAC.

Captain DePete represents ALPA alongside industry leaders on key priority issues and activities, including the FAA Pilot Fitness Aviation Rulemaking Committee, the Equip 2020 working group, the Aviation Working Group for the Eno Center for Transportation and the subcommittees supporting both the RTCA NextGen Advisory Committee and Drone Advisory Committee, to include the Task Group that is focused on UAS funding. He also serves on the Transportation Security Administration’s Aviation Security Advisory Committee and co-chairs its International Aviation Security Committee. 

Based in Memphis, Captain DePete flies and serves as a line check airman on the A310/300 for FedEx Express. He previously served as ALPA Executive Vice President, FedEx Express Master Executive Council Chairman and Local Executive Council Chairman. He was an active member of the ALPA Organizing Committee for the merger with the Flying Tiger Line Pilots Association as well as for the merger with the FedEx Pilots Association. Captain DePete also organized the first Pilots for Kids charity drive for the FedEx Pilots and participated in the development of the first FedEx Pilot Habitat for Humanity project for the Anchorage council.

Captain DePete was the sole representative for U.S. airline labor at the 1995 Asian Pacific Economic Council Transportation Ministerial Meeting held at the U.S. State Department. In addition, he was a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he flew the KC-130 for Squadron VMGR-252 and was stationed at Cherry Point, N.C.

A graduate of St. John’s University, Captain DePete earned a BA in political science. In addition to his ALPA responsibilities, he is a certified investment portfolio manager, having passed the Series 65 (NASAA) Uniform Investment Adviser Law Exam. He resides in Louisville, KY.
